Merano Promenade loop
City charm, history, and the Mediterranean lifestyle - with your dog
Experience Merano at its best: This varied dog-walking route in Merano combines Mediterranean charm, historic sights, and relaxing walking paths along the Passirio River. On this leisurely tour, you’ll discover the famous Passeggiata Tappeiner, the romantic Passeggiata Gilf, the Sissiweg, and the historic Old Town with its Merano arcades.
Surrounded by palm trees, cypresses, and stunning viewpoints, you’ll almost feel like you’re at the seaside - only with a mountain panorama in the background. Perfect for a relaxing outing with your dog, where it’s not the kilometres that count, but the many little “Oh, how beautiful” moments along the way.
Arrival
Take the bus from Lagundo. Feel free to leave your car at the Gapphof - your dog will thank you, because even a bus ride can be a little adventure.
With the Südtirol Guest Pass, you can ride bus lines 213 or 217 for free from the Lagundo shopping centre directly to Merano (Note: dogs must be on a leash and wear a muzzle, and you’ll need to purchase a separate ticket for your dog). Get off at the Rennweg Merano stop. From here, your leisurely stroll along the promenade begins right in the heart of the spa town.
Traveling by public transportation isn’t just convenient - it’s also stress-free: no searching for parking, no driving around in circles, and more time for wonderful experiences with your four-legged friend.
Directions
From the Rennweg stop, first walk uphill toward the historic arcades, then turn left onto Galileistraße and head up to the start of the famous Passeggiata Tappeiner at Restaurant Sissi.
The slight incline quickly takes you to what is arguably Merano’s most famous walking path. The Passeggiata Tappeiner is a true highlight of South Tyrol: Mediterranean plants, palm trees, cacti, and, time and again, breathtaking views over the rooftops of Merano and the surrounding mountains.
Here, the motto is: slow down and enjoy. After all, you’re not in a hurry - and your dog is sure to find plenty of exciting scents.”
Follow the path to the Polveriera. This historic lookout point is one of the most beautiful photo spots in the city. Take a moment to rest and enjoy the view over Merano.
The route then leads gently downhill to the idyllic Passeggiata Gilf. The path along the Passirio River is especially pleasant: old trees provide shade, the water murmurs beside you, and the city suddenly feels far, far away.
Via the summer promenade, you’ll continue on to the popular Sissiweg, named after Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who greatly appreciated Merano for its mild climate and loved to take walks here.
Cross the Passirio River via the Poststeg footbridge to reach the historic Bozner Tor gate. From there, head up to Pfarrplatz/Piazza Duomo with St. Nicholas Cathedral. Then take a leisurely stroll through Merano’s famous arcades - past small shops, cafés, and the typical old-town charm.
At the end of the loop, head back toward Rennweg to the bus stop for the return trip to Lagundo.
Our tip for two- and four-legged friends
After so many wonderful experiences, a little treat is a must, of course. Visit the Sabine ice cream parlour on Galilei Street in Merano - they not only have delicious homemade ice cream for you, but also special dog-friendly ice cream for your four-legged friend.
While you treat yourself to a scoop (or maybe two… we won’t tell anyone), your dog can also enjoy a little refreshment. This makes strolling through town twice as fun - and right in front of the Princely Castle of Merano.
Good to know
- The entire loop runs mostly along paved paths and is very well-suited for dogs.
- Some sections offer pleasant shade in the summer.
- You’ll find several drinking fountains along the promenades and in the Old Town.
- This loop is especially beautiful in the morning or late afternoon, when Merano becomes quieter and the Mediterranean atmosphere can be felt throughout.
- An ideal dog walk in South Tyrol if you want to combine nature, culture, and city life.
Our conclusion
This Merano loop isn’t a “mountain-climbing adventure,” but rather a leisurely stroll for anyone who wants to discover the most beautiful aspects of the spa town of Merano with their dog. A little history, a little nature, a little ice cream - and lots of wonderful memories.
